Monderma Impérial AMB™ Filters – Pack of 2 – Ceramic & Activated Carbon Block
Imperial AMB Filter – Advanced dual-barrier technology, NSF certified
Made in the USA, the Imperial AMB filter combines a microporous ceramic outer shell impregnated with colloidal silver with an inner core of compressed activated carbon block and zeolite.
This hybrid technology forces water to pass through two distinct filter barriers in succession: a first physical ceramic barrier, followed by a second dense, microporous carbon block barrier.
This design allows for more uniform filtration that remains more stable over time than a system using only granular activated carbon.
Performance independently tested by Envirotek Laboratories, Inc. according to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 protocols.
Why choose the AMB version?
Unlike the Imperial GF version, which contains granular activated carbon, the AMB version incorporates a genuine compressed activated carbon block inside the ceramic shell.
The advantages of the AMB carbon block
- Prolonged contact time between water and activated carbon
- Reduction of preferential paths taken by the water
- More uniform filtration than with granular activated carbon
- More consistent performance throughout the service life
- Better stability of the filter media over time
- Constant adsorption across the entire thickness of the carbon block
The flow rate of the AMB filter is intentionally controlled to optimize the contact time of the water with the different filter media. A white tube provided with the filters allows the flow rate to be increased when necessary.
A true dual-barrier technology
An often overlooked advantage: water passes through two successive microporous structures
In the Imperial AMB filter, water does not just pass through a single filter medium. It must pass through two thick porous structures in succession.
It first encounters the microporous ceramic outer shell, which acts as a first physical barrier against particles and suspended matter.
The water then passes through the compressed activated carbon block, whose structure also contains an extremely fine network of interconnected pores. These micropores provide a large internal surface area for the adsorption of chemical contaminants.
This architecture creates a cascade filtration effect:
- the ceramic serves as the first physical barrier;
- the carbon block forms a second dense and microporous barrier;
- contaminants that have passed through the ceramic encounter a second level of treatment;
- the ceramic limits the entry of particles into the carbon block;
- the pores and adsorption sites of the activated carbon are better protected against premature clogging.
The two barriers complement and protect each other: the ceramic protects the carbon block, while the carbon block provides a second stage of filtration and adsorption.

A compact design with more filter material
A compact 7-inch Imperial format
The Imperial AMB filter measures only 7 inches in height with a diameter of 2.75 inches. This relatively short and wide shape allows a large quantity of filter material to be concentrated in a compact element.
In the upper chamber of a gravity fountain, its reduced height allows it to remain largely surrounded by water for a greater part of the filtration cycle.
When the water level begins to drop, a significant proportion of the filter's outer surface can thus remain submerged longer than with a taller element.
Hydrostatic pressure depends primarily on the height of the water in the chamber. The compact format does not artificially create more pressure, but it allows for better exploitation of the available water column and maintains a larger submerged filter surface.
Ceramic approximately 30% thicker than that of the FTO+
According to our comparative measurements, the ceramic shell of the Imperial AMB filter is approximately 30% thicker than that of the Coldstream FTO+ filter.
This extra thickness increases the depth of the first microporous barrier through which the water passes.
- Longer path through the ceramic structure
- Deeper physical barrier against particles
- More robust structure during surface cleaning
- Reinforced protection of the internal carbon block
- Reduction of premature clogging by sediment
Carbon block approximately 40% thicker than that of the Black Berkey®
According to our comparative measurements, the wall of the Imperial AMB's compressed activated carbon block is approximately 40% thicker than the filter wall of a Black Berkey® element.
Since water is forced to pass through the entire thickness of the carbon block, this design promotes:
- a longer path through the activated carbon pores;
- prolonged contact time with the filter medium;
- a large internal adsorption surface area;
- better filtration uniformity;
- a reduction in preferential paths;
- enhanced stability of performance over time.
Two thick barriers that complement each other
The advantage of the Imperial AMB filter does not rely solely on the combination of two different materials. It relies on the succession of two true, very thick filter walls:
- a microporous ceramic outer shell, approximately 30% thicker than that of the Coldstream FTO+;
- an internal compressed activated carbon block, whose wall is approximately 40% thicker than that of a Black Berkey® element.
Water must thus pass through the ceramic and then the entire thickness of the carbon block before reaching the lower chamber.
This design prioritizes filtration depth, contact time, and performance stability rather than an artificially fast flow rate.
The thickness differences indicated are based on comparative measurements taken on the Imperial AMB, Coldstream FTO+, and Black Berkey® elements. Slight variations may exist depending on manufacturing tolerances.

💡 Our tip for having filtered water available more quickly
For more convenient daily use:
- Fill the upper chamber completely.
- After about two hours, collect the first four liters of filtered water in glass or stainless steel bottles.
- Place the bottles in the refrigerator to have a supply of cool water.
- Refill the upper chamber as many times as necessary.
For the complete filtration of a full tank, allow for about 8 hours.
Ceramic maintenance
The outer ceramic surface can be cleaned when a decrease in flow rate is observed.
Remove the filter from the fountain, then gently clean the surface under cold water using a clean, non-abrasive sponge. Do not use soap, chemicals, or detergents.
This cleaning helps remove particles accumulated on the surface of the ceramic and restore some of the initial flow rate.
Compatibility
The Imperial AMB filter is compatible with the majority of gravity filtration systems using a standard 2.75-inch format:
- Monderma Water Filters
- Berkey®
- British Berkefeld®
- Phoenix®
- ProOne®
- Other gravity systems compatible with the 2.75-inch format
Important
The Imperial AMB filter is designed exclusively for filtering cold water in gravity systems operating without pressure.
It must not be used with hot water or connected to a pressurized water supply.
When water comes from a well, a spring, or a source of unknown microbiological quality, a prior water analysis and appropriate disinfection may be necessary.
Performance and service life may vary depending on water quality, contaminant concentration, frequency of refilling, and maintenance conditions.
